Gabriel Drugs — Ottawa’s Compounding Pharmacy serving the Centerpointe community for over 20 years.
Pain Management Compounding
One of our most successful compounding idea was a solution for an athlete who had a sports injury. The challenge was to relieve local pain without administering a systemic prescription drug that could cause drowsiness or stomach upset. We were able to provide a topical product that relieved pain and inflammation at the site. The compounded cream was used successfully to treat athletes at the Vancouver Olympics.
These compounds are greatly effective because they contain potent anti-inflammatory drugs and a muscle relaxant in a specific base that enhances the absorption to provide fast effective relief of pain to specific areas.
Compounding for Children
It’s no secret that most kids don’t like taking medicine. There’s nothing fun about being sick, and taking medicine just seems to make it worse. But it doesn’t have to be that way. While there’s no guarantee that taking medicine ever will become an entirely pleasurable event, there are some ways to help your child.
From flavouring medications to make them taste better, to providing individualized strengths and dosage forms, a compounding pharmacist can help make medication time easier and less stressful for your child – and you! We can compound medicine for your child in a variety of forms from liquids to lollipops.
Children are especially suited for custom compounded prescriptions. For various reasons, commercially manufactured drug forms sometimes may not meet the needs of every child. Compounding can benefit young patients in a variety of ways..
Working closely with a compounding pharmacist, your child’s pediatrician can prescribe medications for:
- Pain relief
- Respiratory disorders
- Oral thrush
- Diaper rash
- Skin disorders
- Cold sores/fever blisters
- And much more!
Menopause is a condition that affects millions of women across the world. It is associated with symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, osteoarthritis and depression. Many physicians have been avoiding conventional hormone replacement therapy due to increased risk of thrombotic events (blood clots) and breast cancer. However, lately there have been some studies to indicate that compounded transdermal bio-identical hormone therapies may be beneficial and offer less risk. The term bio-identical hormone replacement therapy in a transdermal form can be explained in a simple way; a compound of various hormones (estradiol, estrogen, or progesterone) in a specific base cream that offers extensive absorbtion through the skin to deliver the hormones to the blood stream.
In contrast to oral therapy, trans dermal compounds offer less risk of blood clots and adverse effects. These compounds actually proved to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular biomarkers (fasting glucose and triglycerides) and quality of life. We also compound hormonal suppositories in different prescription strengths.
For our male population, we are equally successful in compounding topical testosterone preparations. It has proved to be an effective way of therapy compared to intramuscular injections. Injections are usually not able to provide a steady state of the hormone in the blood. The patient experiences high levels of hormones for the first week after injection then declining levels thereafter, while daily topical therapies provide more consistent levels.
Throughout the years, our compounding staff has acquired more experience in the hormone replacement line. Through continuous learning and support from the experts at PCCA (a pharmaceutical compounding consultant and supply company) we have all the tools and knowledge to confidently provide our patients with the best.
